Traditionally witches and warlocks were humans who received their powers through a pact made with a foreign spirit such as the Fey (and in many christian based stories the devil himself). Of course the definition of witches in modern fiction has greatly broadened and we have magical people of all kinds (both benevolent and malevolent in nature) who attain their powers in other ways. I'm not sure what I'm babbling on about, but i find these things interesting.
